The Neurological Alliance wants the next Government to address 2 key priorities for the benefit of over 8 million people living with neurological conditions in England.

Priority One

IMPLEMENT A STRATEGY FOR CONSISTENTLY HIGH QUALITY NEUROLOGICAL CARE

This can be done by:

• Appointing a National Director for Neurological Care with a clear work plan, who will provide leadership to support local action.

• Appointing a local lead for neurological conditions in every PCT or PCT cluster, with a clear work plan to provide local leadership and co-ordination across health and social care.

• Including neurological conditions in the NHS Indicators for Quality Improvement to allow the NHS to understand and improve services and promote care pathways that are responsive to patient choice.

• Commissioning a mid-point review in 2010 of progress towards implementation of the 10-year National Service Framework for Long-Term Neurological Conditions.

• Initiating a Care Quality Commission special review of services for people with a neurological condition to take place by 2011, in order to measure quality and performance across the NHS and social care.

Priority two

COMMIT TO UK LEADERSHIP IN NEUROLOGICAL RESEARCH

This can be done by:

• Increasing Government research investment for neurological conditions, making it proportionate to the number of people who live with these conditions and the cost to the economy.
