Neurological Alliance writes to NICE
The NICE guideline on Suspected Neurological Conditions has been long awaited by the neurological community. Yet the draft guideline, published for consultation in August 2017, was disappointing. The patient and clinical community raised a number of concerns to NICE. Our comments included the contents being inconsistent and not pitched appropriately for a generalist audience. We also felt the section on information was unhelpful and a missed opportunity to signpost patients to additional support.
Following the public consultation, The Alliance reviewed an updated draft as part of our role on the National Neuro Advisory Group. We also met with NICE in early 2018. Since this time we have not heard anything further from NICE about next steps or anticipated publication date.
Today we have written to NICE to find out the next steps. We have used the opportunity to stress the importance of this guideline being fit for purpose so that it can fulfil its original intention of supporting people with neurological conditions to access timely referral and diagnosis.
