The Neurological Alliance is looking for a Communications and External Affairs Assistant on a fixed term basis.

  • Location: Watford, Hertfordshire (with flexibility to work from home for part of the week)
  • Salary £22,000 per year
  • Deadline to apply: Midday, 6 April
  • Interviews: Via videoconference, 14 April

About us

1 in 6 of us live with a neurological condition in England; from epilepsy to encephalitis and migraine to motor neurone disease, these conditions are diverse, complex and largely unpreventable.

We are the only collective voice for around 80 national and regional organisations working together to make life better for people with a neurological condition. You will be joining and helping to grow a small but dynamic, ambitious and successful charity, which, in collaboration with our member organisations, has raised the profile of neurological conditions like never before.

At a time of change and enormous pressure for the health and social care sector, it is vital that we keep this momentum going to make sure neurology is a national policy priority and that this is translated into vital neurological service improvements. The role of the Alliance has never been more important and as Comms and External Affairs Assistant, you will help us to deliver our exciting strategy.

We are a committed team with four staff members, based in Watford, Hertfordshire, right next to Watford Junction station, with regular trains from/to central London.

About the role

In this role, you will assist our team in communicating our work with our member organisations, people with neurological conditions, and wider stakeholders. You will do this by developing and delivering inspiring, engaging content across our website, social media and email channels. You will support our wider external affairs work in various ways, including keeping abreast of policy developments, undertaking desk-based research, and assisting team members in producing various documents. You will also provide key administrative functions, thereby playing a vital role in ensuring the smooth running of the Alliance.

You will report to the Policy and External Affairs Manager, and hold relationships with staff and Trustees at the Neurological Alliance, suppliers and agencies working on behalf of The Neurological Alliance, Alliance member organisations, people affected by neurological conditions, clinicians, relevant professional organisations, umbrella organisations, industry partners, service providers and regulatory bodies.

Further information about the role is available in the job description below.

About you

To meet the challenge, you will need to be an adaptable self-starter with demonstrable interest in developing a career in the charity/health sector. You may be a recent graduate or be further on in your career and looking to change direction. You will have proven administrative abilities, as well as experience both in using social media in a professional capacity, and in writing for different audiences. You will be motivated, conscientious, trust-worthy, and a team player with excellent interpersonal skills.

The Alliance aims to attract and retain the best staff. To this end we offer the opportunity for flexible working. This can include some home working. Regular 1:1s as well as team meetings form an important part of our management approach and are used as a support and enabling mechanism to help you achieve your work objectives. We invest in our staff and provide opportunities for training and development.

We are an equal opportunities employer, and actively encourage applications from people to whom any of the protected characteristics laid out in the Equality Act would apply.
