National leadership

Effective clinical leadership at national level is an important vehicle for driving service improvement and transformation in a particular disease area. The Neurological Alliance has campaigned for clinical leadership in neurology for many years.

The National Neuro Advisory Group

The National Neuro Advisory Group (NNAG) was created in 2016 as a direct result of The Neurological Alliance’s campaigning activity. It marked the start of a new chapter in national policy activity for The Neurological Alliance.  Since 2016, with The Neurological Alliance’s support, NNAG has gone from strength to strength.  You can read the impact of its work in the 2019 Impact Report.

Since NNAG’s establishment, there have been a number of national improvement initiatives established that relate to neurology.  Most significantly, NHS England has begun a Neurosciences Transformation Programme.  The initial aims of this programme were to reduce variation in specialised neuroscience services, with a focus on epilepsy, MS and neurological auto-immune disease (plus three neurosurgical workstreams).  Recently NNAG and NHS England have announced an extension to this programme, which is now developing pathways for headache disorders, Parkinson’s and movement disorders, MND and Muscular Dystrophy, and Functional Neurological Disorder.

The completed pathways will be published here shortly.
