The Neurological Alliance’s response to the Darzi review
12/09/2024
Georgina Carr, Chief Executive of The Neurological Alliance, responds to Lord Darzi’s independent investigation of the National Health Service in England.
“Lord Darzi’s diagnosis today has confirmed what many people with neurological conditions have been telling us for years. A broken health service has made accessing the right treatment, care and support at the right time a lengthy battle for many and simply out of reach for others. From diagnosis to mental health, Lord Darzi’s report lays bare a health service that is too often unable to meet peoples needs, with devastating consequences for the one in six people affected by neurological conditions and those closest to them.
Neurological conditions represent the greatest burden of disease compared to any other condition. Neurosurgery and neurology services have some of the most stubbornly high waiting lists compounded by critical shortages in our fantastic neuro workforce.
Having seen the diagnosis, we now need action to treat the root causes. Lord Darzi’s frank assessment of the lack of patient voice in decision making emphasises the need for people affected by neurological conditions and organisations who support them to be at heart of this process. As ever, we stand ready to work with colleagues across the health ecosystem to ensure the 10-year plan delivers the genuine change that is so desperately needed.”
